"1633  Boat Landing, Calumet Harbor." in Illinois, including people & an old auto nearby the small steamer Thistle; color postcard published by E. A. Bishop, mailed at Oshkosh Wisconsin in July 1911 by a lady commenting on the 'dandy weather'. She was lucky: later, in a November 1913 storm that took several ships, the grain-laden Thistle perished at this very landing! "Anchor Line  T. S. S. California  Glasgow & New York" showing a side view near shore, black & white postcard printed in England, unused but extensively & unevenly toned both sides. As is. Unfortunately this ship was torpedoed & sank on February 7 1917; 36 people lost their lives. $5.50 s(a)s(o)d

Turbine" with art depicting her underway, flag of the Cunard Line at upper right; Tuck Oilette postcard 9268 (CELEBRATED LINERS--'CUNARD LINE'), printed in England, mailed at Birkenhead NO 30 1907 to a passenger's neighbors. Unusual addressing did not name them or give their street number, simply stating whose houses they were between. Back unevenly toned, a lot of wear along the edges & at 2 corners. One mailed from Perry New York 1907 to Freedom New York has message: 'Here are some views of the wreck Jan 12 - 1907 which I suppose you heard about, at the junction where we left that night.' Amateur photography of fairly high quality, each possibly unique. Good edges, light browning of the paper & some oxidation due to age. On the postcard at the upper right we can read "L. & P. / 441" on a side of one of the units; any lettering before that L is obscured. Three shown. All 8 for $120.00 nd%

Later, when named the Jim Atria, she capsized & sank in the Miami River, and it is now a destination for divers. Rare: the only card of the ship we have ever seen in anyone's stock.   ShipOceanic_NorddeutscherLloydBremenDampferGrosser-200_small.JPG disaster postcard available from Judnick.com  "Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen. / Dampfer 'GROSSER KURFUERST', den 22 Juli 1910. / Bergen" viewing the Norwegian town from the sea, unused black & white post card, light album toning at the corners, faint internal crease near a bottom corner. The name of this ship is sometimes seen as Grosser Kurfürst. Just three years later the Grosser Kurfuerst saved 106 persons from the burning steamship Volturno during a heavy gale on the high seas (10 October 1913). $15.00 s(o)nd

  MIXone_162_small.jpg disaster ship post card available from Judnick.com  "N. Y. K. LINE / M.S. HEIAN MARU, M. S. HEIYO MARU 6,800 GROSS TONS" showing a side view near shore, unused postcard, small corner crease. The passenger cargo luxury liner Heian Maru was converted to be a submarine tender in World War II. It was sunk in the Truk Lagoon of Micronesia, and has now become a diving destination. The Heiyo Maru served during that war as a passenger / freighter and troopship. It was torpedoed and sunk on 17 January 1943, also in Micronesian waters, with hundreds of troops on board. $150.00 js(m)do

"OSLOFJORD" with caption taken from the ship's name showing prominently, unused color postcard issued by the Norwegian America Line (NAL), envelope glue disturbance on back from a covered mailing, edges are good. Used by the Royal Navy as a troopship, it struck a mine on December 1 1940, with some loss of life & subsequent controversy (and propaganda) when it was not towed to the nearest port. Not to be confused with later ships which bore this name, she had two funnels. $20.00 s(m)s(o)d

  ShipOwner_WhiteStar_RMCeltic-200_small.JPG  "R.M.(sic) CELTIC / 20,904 TONNAGE, 700 FT. LENGTH, 754 FT. BREADTH, 13,000 I.H.P." real photo postcard from C. W. Hunt & Co., very late usage at Edenton Ohio (2 different cancels clearly struck, one ties a 1955 rehabilitation seal), slight curl to the paper, one corner multiply creased but not into image, long surface crack in the glossy finish. The caption should read R.M.S. Celtic, which was registered to the White Star Line in 1901. This ill-fated ship saw 17 people aboard die as a result of a mine in 1917, then torpedoed in 1918 with a loss of 6 souls & finally run aground off Queenstown in 1928. $25.00 s(w)s(o)di-o

'Lancastria' -- Cunard Line" Signed art, printed in England, unused post card, slight yellowing of the paper with age, trivial wear at one corner. Ship was lost in World War II when evacuating British Expeditionary Forces at St. Nazaire France, with great loss of life--approximately 5,000--the worst maritime disaster in British history, and not widely publicized at any time. $25.00 s(c)df% Same but better corner & two small paper adherences at the very top front edge. $25.00 s(c)s(m)df.

  ShipOwner_Dollar_HooverAndCoolidge-200_small.jpg ship disaster postcard available from LotsOfCards.com  "S. S. PRESIDENT HOOVER  S. S. PRESIDENT COOLIDGE" unused post card showing the ship underway, Dollar Steamship Lines logo on lightly toned back, trivial edge wear. Both ships were ill-fated. The President Coolidge was a luxury cruise liner that became a military ship during World War II; it sank with loss of 2 lives off Vanuatu while it was serving as a troopship. The President Hoover was mistakenly bombed by Nationalist Chinese on 30 August 1937, with one life lost. After repairs, she ran hard aground off Formosan Samasana Island (now Green Island) on 11 December 37, becoming a total loss. $20.00 s(d)s(o)s(m)vtd

"S.S. 'RYNDAM' 15,015 Gross Reg. Tons / A New Concept in Tourist Travel" postcard printed in the Netherlands for the Holland-America Line, unused, bottom corner bend not easily noticed from the front. Routine sailings were between Rotterdam and New York City. Later named the Copa Casino, she sank 16 March 2003 of the coast of the Dominican Republic. $12.00 s(o)dd

  Indiana_Connersville_Wreck-200_small.jpg disaster post card available from Judnick.com  "Streetcar that the motorman lost control of came down 10th st. at 90 miles an hour, whirled around twice before it hit the cannal(sic) right in front of our house" real photo postcard showing the Rushville - Glenwood - Connersville local car of the Indianapolis & Connersville Traction Line on its side in the water; mailed by Anna Brown DEC 3 1907 in Connnersville to Sarah Spaeth in Brookville Indiana. Eyewitness accounts such as this are rare. Obviously one-of-a-kind: no photographer attribution (she just stepped out of her house), no printed caption (so we used the message instead) & no publisher attribution.   Washington_SteamerYosemiteWrecked.jpg (158618 bytes)  Uncaptioned Azo real photo (triangles up) of the sidewheel steamer Yosemite, run aground July 9 1909 at Orchard Narrows Washington near Bremerton, and a total loss. [The same ill-fated ship whose boilers blew in San Francisco Bay in 1865 killing 50]. Possibly unique because of the lack of caption; many people came out to see it and took pictures of their own. Dark image with much oxidation, unused, brownish paper, toned back. This is not the captioned view that you might have seen produced by an enterprising photographer who sold them commercially. MCMCD  / MONROE COUNTY MOSQUITO CONTROL DISTRICT (USA). Continental black & white Ilford real photo postcard showing its Douglas DC-3 (N28889) being serviced, good composition & focus but image a bit dark, . On May 2 1989 this aircraft crashed after striking mangrove trees; both people on board perished. This Florida District reached agreed in 1995 to discontinue ground spraying of mosquito insecticide from its planes in important Schaus swallowtail habitat during the endangered butterfly's breeding season. WRANGLER AVIATION (United States). Unused regular size copyrighted postcard showing its Canadair CL-44D4-6 (N100BB) on the ground, trivial wear to the bottom corners, minor fingernail indents at the top edge. Exceptionally attractive all that said. Later this aircraft served Pacific Western Airlines, when incurring damage at Eureka Northwest Territory.
