The name of the port is sometimes seen as Damiata or Domyat. In early 1942, this ship evacuated civilians from Antigua to the United States; while on such duty for the Naval Transportation Service she survived German submarine attacks. Later in the war, she was attacked by air off Scoglitti Sicily, and participated in the invasion of Makin Island (Gilbert Islands).
