Hospital, Stepney Causeway." showing several beds for boys & 2 pediatric nurses in attendance, black & white post card, mailed 1906 but stamp removed, extensive light reddish toning near the back bottom obscures nothing, light toning on front, one small bottom corner crease (not into image) . Doctor Thomas John Barnardo was a Victorian social entrepreneur best known for rescuing homeless & afflicted children from the streets. He died in the year previous to this mailing, so the postcard may be part of a fund-raising campaign launched immediately thereafter to fill the void caused by the loss of his considerable fund-raising skills & connections. With the glass, we see a man in blackface, a hobo, a clown, a cowboy... Stamp removed clumsily from the back, causing some paper separation that did not go through to the front. The lower right corner is creased (small). In the area of the window at the upper left are 3 about 1-inch-long paper cracks, possibly caused by the stamp removal. $30.00 (ipg)

BRYANT. "Log Cabin of John H. Bryant, 1833, Princeton, Ills." unused color litho-chrome postcard published by C. J. Dunbar & Company, tiny spot on back near stamp box, faint album marks at corners, good edges, light yellowing of back paper due to age. In 1854 this man invited Abraham Lincoln & Owen Lovejoy to speak at an anti-slave rally in what is now known as Bryant Woods to commemorate the event. Seldom seen. $20.00 iblg

BUCHBINDER & BOCHNER. "Gruss aus Czernowitz" showing the corner signage of Jacob Buchbinder prominently, street repair & curb finishing at the corner, and 'Entw. / Baumst. Bochner' on the sidewalk & completed curb nearby. [The latter translates from German as 'Entwickler / Baumeister Bochner' or 'Developer / Master Builder Bochner'.] The Bochners were one of the first documented Jews in Bukovina, and Czernowitz is the major city of Bukovina. Buchbinder is the name of a Jewish banker in Czernowitz at that time. And thus this postcard depicts the Jewish bank building which was completed on the Ringstrasse there in 1899.
