DALMATIAN (CROATIAN) HISTORY
In 1918--after the surrender of Germany, Austria-Hungary & its allies, a number of after-war boundaries remained to be settled.
Italy, an American ally, had ambitions to gain territories
along the Dalmatian coast, where they had a minority population.
But President Woodrow Wilson proposed boundaries
along majority-language lines instead. Then confrontations
resulted among forces that were recently allied. In little-known maneuverings, the American forces ousted the Italian military from the island of Trau / Trogir & the adjacent Dalmatian coast
(now in Croatia). All this was prior to Wilson's stroke and the treaties that settled most of these lands as Jugoslavian.
The following extraordinary sepia-tone real photo postcards
were taken & annotated by a US sailor during that period,
November 1918 - May 1919, Among other things, they document
the enthusiastic reception given to the Americans by the majority populace there. When we searched the Internet we were
unable to find the likes of these photos from any source.
Presented in chronological order, rather than by caption,
these surviving photos present exceptionally interesting history.

SOUTH PACIFIC HISTORY
After World War I, a treaty among the 3 major naval powers
left the United States without bases in the Western Pacific region
--unlike the other powers. Great Britain & Japan.
Concern about the relative proximity of Japanese bases
on their home islands (roughly 1/5 the distance of Pearl Harbor)
caused the US to project its power & maintain a presence
in the region by using the only option it had available
--cruises in force during the 1920's. Australia, understandably among the nervous about the nearby Japanese, thus welcomed the US naval visits, as the following 2 postcards attest.
