    Appam (registered 1913 to the British & African Steam Navigation Company, Limited). Uncaptioned sepia-tone real photo post card with good focus & contrast, ship's name prominent, toning in right front (not on ship), toning on corresponding back edge too, tiny corner crease. In 1916 this vessel was captured by the German cruiser Moewe and sailed to then-neutral United States. The US District Court ordered her return to the owning company, and it sailed as the Mandingo until the WWI armistice (after which she again became the Appam). Roger Brooke Taney was the fifth Chief Justice of the US, who delivered the majority opinion in the 1857 Dred Scott case that African-Americans could not be considered citizens.
