  ShipOwner_BritishAndAfrican_Appam-100.jpg (168941 bytes)  Appam (registered 1913 to the British & African Steam Navigation Company, Limited). Uncaptioned sepia-tone real photo post card with good focus & contrast, ship's name prominent, toning in right front (not on ship), toning on corresponding back edge too, tiny corner crease. In 1916 this vessel was captured by the German cruiser Moewe and sailed to then-neutral United States. The US District Court ordered her return to the owning company, and it sailed as the Mandingo until the WWI armistice (after which she again became the Appam). "Rear View of Slave Quarters / Chief Justice Taney House / Frederick, Maryland" unused real photo postcard with minor oxidation, publisher not given, some album paste adheres in the back address section, slight curl to the paper. Roger Brooke Taney was the fifth Chief Justice of the US, who delivered the majority opinion in the 1857 Dred Scott case that African-Americans could not be considered citizens. Apparently no one objected at the time to his obvious conflict of interest, illustrated by this postcard: a slave owner ruling on whether his slaves were citizens! Amazing stuff! $10.00 bm(f)l
