Clear U. S. S. DETROIT SEP 2 1945 TOKYO BAY cancel on 6-cent airmail postal stationery #6 envelope from there to Kansas, clear black circular initialed PASSED BY NAVAL CENSOR at lower left corner and well-struck violet TOKYO BAY cachet at bottom front center, neatly typed address & return address, tiny tears & minor wrinkling at bottom front center just into the violet cachet. Contents included--a personal letter dated August 30th, when the ship had not yet reached Tokyo Bay; it arrived September 1st, so the cancel was timely. Also included, an article clipped from the recipient's local newspaper alerting its readers to look out for such material. Although there were dozens of US ships in the bay for the surrender signing, the USS Detroit was one of only two ships there that had also been in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. $200.00 including the collateral material mentioned. jn
